Designing a new warehouse takes a lot of planning and consideration to get it right. Knowing what systems you are going to use, planning the layout, and thinking towards the future are all keys to designing an efficient warehouse. Here are three major aspects of a warehouse design that will affect the layout.
Choose a Storage System
One of the big decisions you’ll need to make is what kind of storage system you plan on using. There are plenty of options when it comes to pallet rack, but it’s a choice you’ll need to make sooner rather than later since your system will take up a large amount of floor space.
Apart from the space used for storing inventory, loading items, and filling orders, what kind of support areas do you need? Do you need a modular office for administrative work, or an area sectioned office by guardrails for product production? Maybe you need a secure storage area protected by a wire partition. Understanding what kind, how many, and what size support areas you need will allow you to include them in your plan, instead of just sneaking them in wherever there’s space as the need arises.
What are your plans for the future of your facility? This might seem like a strange question if you’re just getting a new warehouse together, but designing with expansion in mind will help make any growth later much easier. Just knowing where you might want to install a mezzanine in the future and planning accordingly goes a long way.
